ARARAT - OUR COMMUNITY

About Ararat

Situated in the western district of Victoria and some 200 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, Ararat has a present day population of approximately 6500 people.

"Key regional tourist attractions include:
  • The Grampians National Park
  • Pyrenees wine region
  • Mount Cole Forest
  • Langi Ghiran State Park
  • J Ward
  • Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre
  • Green Hill Lake
  • Lake Bolac
Within the Ararat Rural City municipality, tourism accounts for nearly 150 jobs and injects more than $8 million into the economy. This excludes the hugely popular tourism destination of Halls Gap. There is huge potential for more tourism development, especially in areas abutting the Grampians, Mount Cole and Langi Ghiran parks. Each year, 74,000 domestic visitors stay in the Ararat region spending an average $195 per trip. This equates to 163,000 domestic visitor nights."Accessed 20 December, 2011 from this site
