OUR CATHOLIC IDENTITY
St Mary's is a Catholic school in Diocese of Ballarat. We are a faith-based school that is proud of and continues to celebrate our Catholic heritage. Our focus on our Catholic Identity calls us to reflect on the way in which engage with our students, staff and parents. Every decision we make is driven by our belief in treating others with love, kindness and compassion. Our motto of 'Strength and Gentleness' is be visible in all our actions.
As a school, we are fortunate to have an amazing parish priest who, as a former educator himself, has a deep understanding of education. Fr. Andrew is a regular visitor to our school and supports us both in our religious celebrations and in some of the Religious Education experiences in which the children engage.
As with all parishes in the Diocese of Ballarat, the preparation for the sacraments is a parish based process. Parental involvement is integral in in this sacramental program. Children are given the opportunity to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist during their primary schooling. Adult faith formation evenings support parents in the sacramental journey with their children.
MASSES & LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS
All the students at St Mary's participate in masses and liturgies as members of the community of St Mary's. Our students usually attend a mass or liturgy once per term to celebrate special occasions, feast days or parish masses. These might be celebrated as a whole school or within a Learning Community and might be held in our parish Church of the Immaculate Conception or at school. Our children are actively involved in these celebrations, likewise, we encourage our parents and caregivers to join us in these celebrations.
Teaching our children to consider the needs of others is an important aspect of our Catholic Identity. Some of our Senior Learning Community students belong to our Mission & Justice Leadership team. Working with our Religious Education Leader, they engage in targeted fund-raising activities so that as a school we are able to support those in Australia and overseas who are less fortunate. Our current focus in Project Compassion run by CARITAS Australia, the international aid agency of the Catholic Church in Australia.
