STUDENT WELLBEING

STUDENT WELLBEING
At St Mary's we believe that student wellbeing is fundamental to the ongoing progress of every child. Children who feel safe, happy and valued are far more likely to experience sustained success in their learning.

Our staff place a significant focus on the wellbeing of all the children in their Learning Community. If a student is experiencing situations that are impacting on their wellbeing, it is our practice to communicate this openly with parents to ensure that this is being addressed effectively.

Children who are experiencing increased levels of anxiety can be supported by our school counsellor, Deb Wilson, who works at St Mary's one day a week. Deb will work with students and parents to help support students and address these areas of concern. Parents who feel that their child would benefit from working with Deb can request a referral form from their child's Learning Community Teacher or from our Wellbeing and Community Engagement Leader, Georgie Peel.

Under the leadership of our Wellbeing and Community Engagement Leader, Georgie Peel, St Mary's is beginning our implementation of the Be You initiative developed by Beyond Blue. This is a framework to develop partnerships between the school and parent community in order to ensure that the issue of wellbeing and mental health is being effectively addressed in our school community.

In addition, each of our Learning Communities engages in targeted Social-Emotional Learning with our students using a program called Bounceback. This focuses on teaching children ten core concepts in order to develop their social-emotional understandings:
  • Core values and Social Values
  • People Bouncing Back
  • Courage
  • Looking on the Bright Side
  • Emotions
  • Relationships
  • Humour
  • Being Safe
  • Success
‘learning for all, fairness for all, compassion for all’
