TRANSITION AT
ST MARY'S

TRANSITION
KINDER TO FOUNDATION
At St Mary's we aim to create a safe and happy environment where your child is valued, affirmed and challenged.  In Term Four, our Junior Learning Community staff will liaise with your child's kindergarten to help ease their transition to school.

As a parent you can do much to help your child's transition to school and help make the first few weeks exciting and enjoyable for both you and your child.  Learning to be independent is a most important aspect of readiness for school.  Children who have developed independence are much more able to deal with the new demands that school life places on them.

St Mary's conducts an orientation program for pre-school students.  This is an opportunity for children to spend time with our Foundation for their first year.  Please contact the office at St Mary's if you would like more information regarding orientation.

You can help your child's transition to Foundation by:
  • attending the school information session and tour.
  • visiting the school with your child to get familiar with the surroundings.
  • talk to parents of children in the school.
  • talk to the Foundation teacher about your child's development, skills, strengths and interests.
  • find out about the school's buddy program.
  • encourage a daily routine with your child in readiness for school.
  • interest your child in school and its activities, for example, learning as fun, meeting new friends.

PRIMARY TO SECONDARY SCHOOL
One of the most pivotal stages of schooling is the transition from primary school to the more complex world of secondary school.  This transition can be difficult for some students and schools actively support students as they make this educational and social shift.

As part of the transition from Year Six to Year Seven, students participate in an orientation program at their chosen secondary school which is generally held in Term Four of Year Six and may include:
  • a school tour.
  • meeting fellow students and teachers.
  • taking part in special lessons and activities.

As a parent there are many ways in which you can help your child prepare for the transition to secondary school:
  • talk to the Principal.
  • look at the information on the school website.
  • obtain information about enrolment requirements.
  • consider your child's views in the selection of the school.
  • discuss your choice of school with your child.
  • attend open days with your child.
  • ensure your child attends orientation programs.
